Identifying High-Risk Drivers and What to Do About Them

A recent article from Automotive Fleet pointed out diverse stories by seven fleets about their strategies for identifying high risk drivers, as well as the training programs and successful corrective methods used to address issues that arise when employing such drivers.

Identifying high-risk drivers and enforcing safety compliance should be one of safety/fleet managers’ main goals/objectives. This will ensure employee safety is a priority, and avoid disruption to operations caused by preventable accidents and/or lawsuits. The article mentions that MVR (Motor Vehicle Record) is the most common method to measure driver risk because it can be pulled twice annually to every three years, depending on the company needs. Even though MVR is an effective way to identify drivers with previous violations (especially if used in the pre-hiring process) it is a very reactive approach because it focuses on past events. MVR falls short on predicting potential incidents for drivers with a clean MVR record.
Companies with a more proactive approach focus on identifying high risk drivers before an incident occurred. In other words, before information makes it to the MVR. Safety/Fleet managers should be in the offensive to identify main causes for both unsafe behavior/conditions that are responsible for preventable accidents. Driver Observation programs are a valuable and cost-effective way to identify high risk drivers before it’s too late.
